Dr. Sisoumang’s Next Step Towards Becoming a Surgeon

Celebrating our future in-house surgeon

We are thrilled to share the exciting news that Dr. Sisoumang Sengphachan has officially passed the highly competitive entrance exam for the national Surgical Residency Program in Vientiane. He will begin his three-year training this year, becoming the third doctor that LFHC has sponsored to pursue surgical specialization to return to serve as one of the official in-house surgeon at the hospital.

Dr. Sisoumang,  from Phounthong District, Luang Prabang Province, joined LFHC in October 2020 after graduating from medical school in Vietnam. LFHC was his first job, and from the very beginning, he stood out for his dedication, humility, and commitment to learning. Over the past five years, he has grown into a trusted and capable physician with a strong passion for surgical care.

Becoming a doctor was a dream he held from a young age, inspired by his father who also worked in medicine. His passion for healthcare runs in the family as his sister is a nurse at LFHC, making the hospital not just his workplace but a second home.

"I’m always on call for any surgical learning opportunities, and I enjoy it. It’s exciting to learn about the human body and to be able to help someone right away. That feeling of making a difference immediately is what I love most about surgery."

His interest in surgery began while performing minor procedures like K-wire removals and burn dressing changes. As his confidence grew, so did his curiosity.

Over the past year, Dr. Sisoumang has taken every opportunity to assist and observe surgeries at both LFHC and the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital, gaining valuable experience and preparing for the next step in his career.

When asked what keeps him motivated, he shared,
"I’m always on call, and I enjoy it. It’s exciting to learn about the human body and to be able to help someone right away. That feeling of making a difference immediately is what I love most about surgery."

Although relocating to Vientiane means being apart from his wife and one-year-old child in Luang Prabang, he remains optimistic. “It’s a great opportunity,” he said. “And with the train, it’s easy to visit on weekends.”

Dr. Sisoumang’s journey reflects our mission to build the future of healthcare in Laos by investing in young doctors through advanced medical training. Once he completes his residency, he will return to join two other LFHC doctors currently in surgical training. Together, they will form the hospital’s first official team of general surgeons.

Their return marks a critical step toward our goal of building a sustainable healthcare system, one where Lao children receive high-quality care from Lao professionals. Dr. Sisoumang’s dedication, along with that of his fellow trainees, is helping turn this vision into reality.

We are proud to support his journey and look forward to the day he returns to LFHC, not just as a doctor, but as a surgeon, teacher, and role model for the next generation.
