Lifesaving Ultrasound Machine arrives at LFHC

Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) recently received a brand-new ultrasound machine thanks to the generosity of Philips Foundation and RAD-AID International.

The ultrasound machine is already making a real difference in how quickly we can diagnose and treat our patients.

"This new equipment helps us make fast and accurate diagnoses," explains Ngeun Vongphakdy, LFHC’s Radiology Manager.

In a setting like LFHC, ultrasound technology is particularly valuable. It’s relatively low cost to operate and maintain, which makes it ideal for our hospital, while its versatility helps us serve more children with various medical needs.

Only recently, a patient came into our Emergency Department with severe stomach pain and vomiting - symptoms that could indicate many conditions. Using the new ultrasound machine and with guidance from volunteer Sonographer, Eva Tutone, our team quickly identified ‘Intussusception’, a serious condition when a part of the intestine slides into another section, causing a blockage. If left untreated, this can lead to life-threatening complications such as bowel obstruction and tissue death, leading to perforation.

“Thanks to the new ultrasound machine, we identified the problem right away and alerted the doctors,” added Ngeun. The team treated the child immediately by non-surgical reduction, and the patient was discharged home just days later.

RAD-AID International has stood with LFHC from the beginning, since we opened. Their specialist volunteers provide our radiology staff with hands-on training, ensuring we get the most from all donated equipment. They also offer ongoing expert help with image interpretation to support our doctors with accurate diagnoses.

This new medical equipment is saving lives daily.  RAD-AID’s support allows us to provide diagnostic services that are on par with those in well-resourced facilities.

As the only free pediatric hospital in Laos, LFHC gives children access to quality care they might otherwise miss due to limited diagnostic options or cost barriers. Today, they receive the care they need quickly, accurately, and at no financial cost.
