Two Years On - Prevention Programme Progress Report
From 2023 to 2025, the LFHC Prevention Programme has been working alongside local health teams and communities across Luang Prabang Province to tackle one of Laos's most persistent challenges: childhood malnutrition. Here's what's been achieved.
By working directly with district health staff and village health volunteers, LFHC prevention teams brought growth monitoring, MUAC screening, and practical nutrition training into northern Lao communities, especially during the first 1,000 days of life when early intervention has the greatest impact. The program focuses on building skills, ensuring local health workers and caregivers are trained in ways that last long after each field visit.
This progress has been possible through strong partnerships with UNICEF and Child’s Dream, as well as close collaboration with Provincial Health Departments. Together, these partners support prevention efforts that match national priorities while reaching underserved communities.
Key results include earlier identification of malnutrition, improved caregiver knowledge, quicker referrals, and a decrease in severe cases requiring hospital treatment. The programme is on track to expand to additional high-burden districts, and Luang Prabang Province is emerging as a national learning hub for preventive child nutrition.
Looking ahead
LFHC aims to further expand community prevention activities, strengthen referral pathways between villages and hospitals, and continue integrating prevention into routine health services. With sustained partner and donor support, the programme seeks to reach more children earlier, reduce preventable hospital admissions, and contribute to long-term improvements in child health across Laos.
None of this would be possible without the support of our partners and donors. Thank you for being part of this work.
