Medical Education Center (MEC) |
Cambodia’s violent history has left an enduring shadow, evident in the dire lack of well-trained health professionals. At the end of the Khmer Rouge Regime in 1979 all but 40 of Cambodia’s doctors had perished or fled the country. Now, there are only 30 doctors to serve every 100,000 Cambodians. Outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, the situation is even worse. Facilities are rudimentary, understaffed and drastically under-utilized.
AHC is an officially recognized teaching hospital. Working in conjunction with the Cambodian Ministry of Health and regionally active organizations, we seek to produce quality health professionals. AHC’s
Medical Education Center is internationally renowned for the quality of its programs, which range from long-term pediatric residency to short courses including the WHO endorsed Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) training. AHC leads the effort to rebuild Cambodia’s medical infrastructure by training doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, and administrators. By producing professionals with the skills to not only practice but teach, we hope to move Cambodia towards self-sustainability.
