Community First-Aid Training

For the last few years the AHC staff has taught basic first-aid skills to local community organizations. This year we are expanding the program to benefit even more Cambodians. On February 6th and 7th AHC staff traveled to Preh Vihea province, about 160 kilometers from Siem Reap, to provide basic first-aid teaching in the villages of Koh Ke and Phum Thmei. In total 24 villagers completed a one-day training session that focused on how to deal with common problems such as choking, bleeding, broken bones, and burns.

Leng Daly, one of the AHC nurses teaching the first-aid courses, notes that "On behalf of our team, I would like to say thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to visit these villages and provide such valuable assistance to rural people, helping them know what they should do when they have health or accident problems. It was also a good opportunity for us as trainers to better understand the situation of people living in rural areas. Everyone in our team was very happy to assist the villagers."

As well this month, the hospital began two new regularly scheduled basic first-aid classes for other groups of non-medical persons. The first is for parents of children admitted to the hospital. On February 13, 6 parents participated in the initial course. The second regularly scheduled training sessions will target motorcycle taxi drivers (motodops). 15 motodop drivers participated in the inaugural course held on February 27.

Diploma Child Health

AHC continually strives to improve the quality of patient care. One way is by valuing and promoting the importance of providing continuing medical education opportunities. In 2006, AHC partnered with The Children's Hospital at Westmead (Australia) to provide senior AHC doctors with Diploma Child Health (DCH) through distance education.

On February 7th, seven of AHC's most senior medical staff graduated from the DCH course. On hand to present the diplomas was Dr. Kathy Currow of Westmead Hospital who has played a central part in initiating and monitoring the DCH program at AHC. Our heartfelt thank you to Dr. Currow and congratulations to the AHC doctors!

Memorandum of Understanding with Wajiro Hospital (Japan)

On February 22, AHC celebrated its 8th Anniversary. From the beginning, Wajiro Hospital in Japan has been a tremendous supporter with the donation of funds, equipment and the exchange of medical staff and information. AHC is very proud to acknowledge this partnership by signing a Memorandum or Understanding (MOU) with Wajiro Hospital and its CEO, Dr. Kamachi. We all look forward to continuing our cooperation and doing all we can together to improve medical care for the children of Cambodia.

New Hospital Staff

A new year at the hospital usually means new staff and this year is no exception. A big welcome to all the new staff that have recently joined our AHC team to help provide better care for the children and families we serve. Starting this month are 5 new doctors who will begin a three-year training curriculum, 6 new nurses, as well as assistants to the logistics, registration, and administration departments.

Volunteers

AHC would not be what it is without the help of volunteers from around the world. We would like to thank all the volunteers who generously donated their time and expertise in February. Volunteers this month worked alongside our local staff in a wide variety of activities. Visiting medical specialists mentored AHC doctors and nurses at bedside and provided lectures as part of the hospital's continuing education programs. Some of the non-medical volunteers helped with construction and renovation projects, compiled hospital policies, and offered support to our logistics and administration departments. A big thank you to each and every one of them!

Hospital Renovations

With an average of 300 children a day using hospital services there is a constant need to update and repair the buildings. Anyone visiting the hospital in February would have no doubt noticed improvements being made in several locations. Finishing touches are being completed to the new Outpatient Department examination and consult area, a newly renovated laundry building offers more effective work space for our Housekeeping Department, and construction has begun on a Minor Surgical Procedures Room adjacent to the Emergency room that will allow for safer patient care.
