Dengue Fever

As the rainy season in Cambodia begins, so does the appearance of Dengue Fever. It is an infectious disease transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, known in Cambodia as the Tiger mosquito because of its stripes. (A different type of mosquito causes malaria) The young are most at risk for Dengue Fever because they have not built up an immunity to the disease. There is no vaccine against Dengue Fever and no specific drug which treats the disease. When the disease is severe treatment includes IV fluids and blood transfusions. Dengue Fever epidemics seem to occur every few years. As we have already seen several cases early in the season, we anticipate facing more than the usual number of cases this year.

More Cleft Lip Surgeries

Oral surgeon, Dr. Mitch Stark returned to AHC this month to once again assist our local surgical team in performing cleft lip and palette repairs. 13 children were operated on in April. In 2006, with the help of Dr. Stark as well as other visiting surgical specialists, nearly 100 Cambodian children with cleft lips were operated on at AHC.

Training for Government Doctors and Nurses

Twice each year AHC implements a structured training program for government doctors and nurses aimed at increasing their basic skills to more effectively treat Cambodian children. This month 5 doctors and 6 nurses from Makara Referral Hospital, Anlongveng Health Center, Oddor Meanchey Referral Hospital, Oddor Meanchey Referral Hospital and Angkorchum Referral Hospital began the April/May session. The doctors will complete a two-month course at AHC and nurses will complete a one-month program. The training program is made possible with the generous support of Medical Teams International (MTI), Belgium Technical Cooperation (BTC), and FWAB’s Capacity Building and Health Education Program (CB-HEP).

HVO Golden Apples Award Winners

Volunteers have always played an integral role in the ongoing development of AHC. From the inception of the hospital, Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) an American based volunteer agency has been a wonderful partner. Congratulations and thank you to the two volunteers who donated their time to AHC and have been selected as recipients for HVO’s Golden Apple Award: Dr. Marvin Godner and Suzanne Brown.

AHC Doctor Named to National Hemophilia Association

Congratulations to Dr. Seng Heng Heng, who this month was named Deputy Chairman of the newly formed Cambodia Hemophilia Association. The association has been formed to develop national treatment guidelines as well as to increase the awareness of hemophilia among Cambodia’s health workers and in the community.

Research Paper Accepted for Publication

Congratulations to Dr. Seitaboth and Kazumi Akao whose research paper (co-authored with staff from Medicines sans Frontiers) has been accepted for publication. The article, “Effectiveness of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy in HIV-positive children: evaluation at 12 months in a routine program in Cambodia”, will appear in a future edition of the online journal Pediatrics Electronic Pages. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org

Hospital Renovations

This month a new Minor Procedures Room opened at AHC made possible with the generous support of Mr. Hartmut Giesecke. The new space allows for our doctors and nurses to better treat children with minor conditions such as small lacerations and abscesses. Having the new room lessons the burden on our Emergency Room and decreases the waiting time for families. Since opening this month, more than 350 small surgical procedures have been performed in the new room.

New Additions

There were two new welcome additions for AHC staff this month: On April 7, Mrs. Visal “Mom” Maray (Administrative Secretary) delivered here first baby. The baby boy, Ros Manit (left), weighed in at 2.9Kg. On April 26 Mr. Im Uom (Sugery Nurse) and his wife Mrs. Khy Nearyroth (Home Care Nurse) also delivered their first baby, a 3.1kg boy named Ouern Vithyea (right).
