| Yasushi Akashi Honorary Advisor of Friends Former Under-Secretary-General of Humanitarian Affairs, United Nations Current Director of Hiroshima Peace Research Center Today Cambodians have started enjoying peace after the long-lasting wars. However, it is reported there are more than eight million land mines left all over Cambodia, meaning there is actually one land mine for every Cambodian. Everyday, people are either being killed or injured by these mines -- this includes innocent children. It is heart-breaking to witness the suffering of this horrendous left over of war, this very unwelcome and unexpected addition to the daily struggle for survival under conditions created by poverty and severe shortages. Friends Without A Border is a non-profit-organization that was founded by Mr. Kenro Izu and his friends in New York that had a plan to build and manage Angkor Hospital For Children, a free pediatric hospital with a rehabilitation facility in Cambodia. The budget was estimated at 1.5 million dollars, and proceeding step by step, Friends Without A Border completed the building of the hospital in only three years. When I met Mr. Izu and other members of Friends Without A Border, I was deeply touched by their compassion and strong commitment to this plan. As an honorary advisor to Friends Without A Border, I hope that you will also contribute to help bring smiles back to the faces of Cambodian children. |
