"Because of the desperate economic situation in Cuba,
the parents, hoping for better lives for their children, put
an inordinate amount of pressure on their young girls to become
ballet dancers and their boys to be great boxers. This is
their only ticket out of Cuba and a chance at freedom. This
nine-year-old boxing champ just lost a fight. He seemed to

0003 Surface of Dini ffrom the series of Mathmatical Forms
2004
Lithgraph
Printed in 2007
17 5/8x14"
Signed and editioned in pencil on the recto
Edition no.58/75
Framed
Estimate $4,200
This image represents Dini's surface: a surface of constant
negative curvature obtained by twisting a pseudosphere. Sugimoto
photographed suites of "stereometric exemplars,"
fabricated in Germany in the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries and now owned by the University of Tokyo. The mathematical
models are sculptural renderings of trigonometric functions:
the mechanical models were teaching aids for showing the dynamics
of Industrial Revolution-age machinery. It is Sugimoto's intention
to express "Art resides even in things with no artistic
intentions." The image appears in the artist's monograph
Hiroshi Sugimoto, Etant donne: Le Grand Verre (Foundation
Cartier pour l'art contemporain, 2005) pg 38.
