Staff and Volunteers
AHC’s success is a product of the effort, determination and compassion of the people who work and volunteer there. AHC’s staff, 90% of whom are native Khmer, work tirelessly to help the children they see every day and to improve their country. Many invested precious family resources in health careers rather than higher paying ventures in the booming tourist industry. Many overcame unspeakable hardships in their childhoods during years of war and dictatorial regime. However, AHC’s incredible staff do not waste time looking back, instead they speak only about the future, not their own, but Cambodia’s and the children’s. As AHC has grown Khmer doctors, nurses and administrators have moved into senior managerial positions, and the dream of a self-sufficient pediatric hospital in Siem Reap is slowly being realized. Our staff has been mentored over the past 7 years by a steady stream of long term volunteers, experienced pediatric doctors and nurses who have trained local Cambodian medical staff and set up new hospital departments. Our volunteers most often come to AHC through programs such as Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO) and Health Volunteer Overseas (HVO). We also have a special relationship with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health, through which nurses and surgeons, specially trained in high-volume circumstances, spend six months at AHC on an ongoing basis. Short term, specialist visits are also made by foreign volunteers, who share their expertise in a very specific field of pediatric medicine. Would you like to adopt a doctor or nurse?
