AHC Departments and Services

AHC is centrally located in Siem Reap City, the third largest city in Cambodia (population 90,000) and serves the entire province of Siem Reap (population 700,000). The hospital treats children ranging in age from newborn to 15 years. Staffed by an international team of health care professionals, AHC currently offers outpatient and inpatient services, basic surgery, 24-hour emergency service, dental care and pediatric medical training for Cambodian doctors and nurses. In addition we offer information to families on preventative health, proper nutrition and sanitation and have several outreach programs aimed at educating the community on health issues.

The Outpatient Department was the first operational department of AHC, opening in January 1999. Currently, over 363,000 children have been treated in this department. AHC’s success is evident in the increasing number of patients who seek her services. It is not uncommon for the outpatient department to see over 300 children on a given day. Some who arrive at AHC’s doors require the emergency or surgical services available. Most outpatient cases, however, involve respiratory infections, diarrhea and other preventable illnesses. AHC hopes to confront many of the illnesses caused by poverty, malnutrition and lack of education not only through community outreach programs, but in the hospital as well by providing children and their families with vaccinations, multivitamins and basic information on nutrition and public health.

The Inpatient Ward (IPD)opened in May, 1999 with just one bed. The ward now contains 50 beds and has treated over 17,200 patients. The increased capacity of the IPD is reflective of the progress made by the Khmer IPD nurses who provide attentive and effective 24-hour care. Cambodian and expatriate doctors work one-on-one to manage the care of admitted patients. The most common ailments treated in the IPD are malaria, pneumonia, TB, dengue fever, meningitis, and malnutrition.

The Acute Care Unit (ACU) includes three emergency and three intensive care beds. On average over 30 patients are admitted to the ACU each month. Many of our emergency cases involve acute respiratory distress/failure, trauma, and other acute onset diseases. Often times, these children move to occupy intensive care beds where they receive the high intensity nursing and medical care they require.

AHC is one of only two hospitals in Siem Reap province capable of providing Pediatric Surgical Care. Given the high demand for surgical treatment, our team is kept on 24-hour call. AHC surgeons have performed many operations, including acute trauma cases, tumors, orthopedic and hernia surgeries. In 2005 the first cardiac surgeries were performed at AHC.

The Low Acuity Unit (LAU) serves as a transitional area for patients who are not critical but are not able to return home. Many of AHC’s patients and their families make long journeys from villages outside of the city. The LAU allows patients to recover sufficiently before making their return journey, allows parents to learn the techniques to care for their child such as the application of dressings, and gives the staff an opportunity to observe the child’s progress.

The AHC Dental Department treats approximately 14,000 children a year. Because 9 out of 10 patients surveyed by AHC have tooth decay or gum disease resulting from poor oral hygiene and lack of care, many more children require dental services.
